Community Description:

The City of London arguably has the strongest community connection to the Afghanistan conflict. Companies from London have been responsible for supplying the CAF with all operational LAV IIIs used extensively in the theatre of battle, as well as, building all LAV III Monuments to honour the very same CAF who served and sacrificed during the same conflict. Fanshawe College welding students, Militex Coatings Inc and General Dynamic Land Systems-Canada united to build all LAV III Monuments shipped across the country to commemorate our heroes in a symbolic way.

London’s LAV III Monument installation highlights these organizations along with the numerous members of 4RCR and 1st Hussars who served in Afghanistan and especially Londoner, Trooper Mark Wilson, of the Royal Canadian Dragoons who died from an Improvised Explosive Device in Panjwayi District, in 2006.

Since its founding, the City of London has always had a strong connection to the Canadian forces and defense industry. In 1923, Wolseley Barracks became headquarters for The Royal Canadian Regiment and it is currently home to the 4th Battalion (4RCR), as well as the Regional Cadet Organizations and 1st Hussars. The city is also home to numerous veterans’ groups and military museums, including The RCR Museum, The First Hussars Museum, The Secrets of Radar Museum and Garrison Community Council.

The RCR Museum is the perfect location to preserve London’s stories about Afghanistan. As an accredited Canadian Forces Museum, it is committed to providing a home for regimental history and fostering a deeper understanding of the Regimental experience during times of peacekeeping and war.
