BACKGROUND
Children of military parents killed while on duty in the Canadian
Forces are now eligible to receive financial assistance for their post-secondary education
from the Canada Company Scholarship Fund launched in October 2007.
The scholarship fund is in recognition of the selfless sacrifice that Canada’s brave
military personnel make in the service of their country.
The Canada Company Scholarship Fund provides up to $4,000 per year for up to four years
to support the post-secondary education for children who qualify. The fund will provide
scholarship grants to children retroactively to January 1, 2002.
CIBC initially provided leadership funding in the amount of $1 million, which has now
grown to approximately $2.0 million. Canada Company has also secured financial support
from Peter Munk, Founder and Chairman of Barrick Gold Corporation; Jim Balsillie,
Co-Chief Executive Officer of Research In Motion (RIM); R B & H Inc.; Paul Desmarais,
President and Co-CEO of Power Corporation of Canada; the W. Garfield Weston Foundation;
Bank of Montreal, Scotiabank, Standard Life Assurance Company of Canada, and, from AGF
Management Limited.
Canada Company oversees the fund and is supported by an independent
Scholarship Fund Oversight Committee to ensure
that bereaved children have the opportunity to receive scholarship grants for their
post-secondary education. This oversight committee also determines the eligibility
criteria, disburses the funds, and makes recommendations to Canada Company for future
funding requirements.

assistance for the post-secondary education of children who have lost a
parent while on military duty any time since January 1, 2002.
